How important is using an encrypted link?

At our own program we offer affiliates the choice of using Encrypted links because if webmasters are asking for it - we want to give it to them.
Some of the concerns I have heard of are that the surfer will remove the affiliate id if they can see it, or it will look like an affiliate link to a spider and it will work against the affiliate's own site optimization.
When is it best to use encrypted links and when is it best to use a standard link that clearly displays an affiliate id?
